Momentum delegate Esther Song

Dr. Esther Song is an Associate Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Bergen. She has previously worked at the German Institute for Global and Area ´óÏó´«Ã½ (GIGA) in Hamburg (2022-2023) and held visiting positions and fellowships at Fudan University in Shanghai (2017, 2025). She holds MA and PhD in Political Science from Stanford University (2020).Ìý

Song’s research focuses on authoritarian politics and international relations in the Asia-Pacific, with a particular emphasis on China and the Korean Peninsula. She has published in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of East Asian ´óÏó´«Ã½, Australian Journal of International Affairs, and the Journal of Chinese Political Science.Ìý

Song’s work combines statistical analyses of survey data and computational text analysis, and her recent projects explore China’s civil society policy, and how anti-China sentiment is shaped by political discourse and media narratives. In years to come, she is interested in conducting research on several new topics, including the effect of China’s democracy-related propaganda on global public attitudes, and knowledge production in China. Committed to bridging academic research and public engagement, Dr. Song has contributed policy commentary to international outlets and participates actively in scholarly networks across Europe, Asia, and North America.Ìý
