The Museum Garden Greenhouse
The greenhouse is the place for environment-friendly tropical and mediterranean experiences, without having to actually travel there. It is also a place for learning about and enjoying plants from warmer climates, where the cold winters’ frosts do not reach. Fantastic colours, forms and scents. Welcome into the warmth!

Main content
The house was purchased as a construction kit from Brzeg in Poland (Brieg in Germany at the time). It was a gift to Bergen Museum from C. Mohr, a well known merchant in those days. The plan for the construction and its plant exhibitions was made by the director of the museum, J. Brunchorst, and the greenhouse was inaugurated in October 1901. Initially, it looked different from now. The wings were widened in 1936, and the original rounded roof was changed and raised in 1959.
ÌýÌý The house still comprises the original three sections with different temperature and humidity regimes: The warm house towards the South (Varmhuset), the palm house (Palmehuset) in the center, and the cold house to the North (Kaldhuset). There are still a few plants living that were in the original exhibition: The tall kentia palm in the palm room, as well as some perennials in the warm house. Many of the plants have been here for a long time.
The warm house
The warm house has a wet tropical climate with a temperature of 26°C throughout the year, and a humidity close to 100%. The plant exhibition consists of tropical crop plants along with many flowering plants from the tropics. There is a large collection of beautiful and distinctive orchids, both terrestrial and epiphytic, as well as epiphytes from other plant groups. There is also a small pond here.
The Palm house
The middle section with the entrance is 10 m high and it houses our large palms and banana plants, together with other trees and a variety of tropical forest plants. The palm house is humid, but slightly cooler than the warm house, and it maintains a constant temperature of approx. 22°C. You can enter the rainforest and see the bananas blossom.
The cold house
The wing to the north is cooler, approx. 8-18°C and is cold in winter (but frost free) and warmer in summer. The plant collection consists of various plants from subtropical areas and areas with a mediterranean climate. There is a set of cultivated plants, but also orchids and so-called "carnivorous" plants. At the very end you find the desert: a collection of succulents from dry areas in different parts of the world.
