Agora is a federal association set up in 2005 by human rights organisations in the Russian cities of Kazan, Cheboksary and Chita. Its staff of 35 lawyers take cases connected to the abuse of power by authorities across Russia.They defens activists, bloggers, journalists and NGOs against actions taken by government agencies. Agora does not charge its clients for its services, but the lawyers get paid via donations to the organisation.
Pavel Chikov is a highly visible advocate of human rights in Russia. He has chaired Agora since the organisation was founded in 2005. His main focus is those who have suffered as a result of the authorities abusing their power.
Agora, represented by Pavel Chikov, is coming to Bergen to recive . The award is a recognition of their relentless and professional work to defend human rights in a Russia where organisations and individuals are subjected to increasing pressure from the authorities.Â
