Main content

Anja Salzmann, is a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for the Science of Learning and Technology (SLATE) at the Faculty for Psychology with a transdisciplinary academic background and professional experiences from public and private sector outside academia. She has expertise in qualitative-empirical and theoretical-analytical research on the adoption of complex socio-technical IT systems by societal risk groups and applying strategies and methods of the European Policy Framework Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). In her doctoral thesis she explored innovation processes in journalism and the consequences of an uncritical adoption of mobile technology and complex IT infrastructures by journalists and the related uncontrolled dataveillance for democracy, human rights and human dignity.

Her current research focuses on the (ir-) responsible development, assessment, adoption as well as rejection of (un-)desirable AI technologies and infrastructures in education. Informed by critical, macro-sociological, historical and philosophical perspectives Salzmann is mainly interested in questions regarding the political economy of AI as well as the epistemological and ontological underpinnings of artificial intelligence. In her current work she focuses especially on data-intensive approaches of metrification and surveillance in education such as learning analytics and the tensions emerging of combining technocratic forms of governance with democratic principles.
