The UiB delegation for UNOC3 in Nice

The University of Bergen is sending a delegation of seven women academic and scientific staff to participate at the third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice 9-13 June as well as the preceding One Ocean Science Congress and other activities with partners from Bergen, Norway and internationally.

The delegation is led by Rector Margareth Hagen. The UiB delegation consists of seven researchers from across disciplines at UiB's faculties.聽UiB is one of the few institutions present at UNOC3 fielding an all-women delegation.


Rector
In Nice: Friday 6-Monday 9 June

  • Margareth Hagen has been UiB鈥檚 rector since January 2021. She leads the UiB delegation at UNOC3 and is the university鈥檚 representative on the board for the One Ocean Bergen initiative, which brings together partners from Bergen and Vestland county. She will be speaking at the special event 鈥One Sustainable and Equitable Ocean鈥 on board tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl in the port of Nice on Saturday 7 June.


Professor
In Nice: Sunday 8-Tuesday 10 June

  • Vigdis is a community ecologist interested in how natural and human global change drivers affect plants, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions and services at different spatial and temporal scales. She is the Director of Centre for Sustainable Area Management (CeSAM) and former Director of bioCEED, a Centre of Excellence in Biology Education supported by the Norwegian Directorate Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir). Vigdis leads the . She is a Coordinating Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
  • Areas of expertise: biodiversity loss, invasive alien species, global change ecology, ecosystem functions, heathland systems


Professor
Wednesday 11-Saturday 14 June

  • Lise is EASAC鈥檚 Vice-President (Environment Programme; External Stakeholders and Partner Engagement) and former President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2022-2024). She is a marine microbiologist with a special research interest in microbial diversity. She has been involved in Arctic fieldwork and research projects for more than 25 years. For many years she has been actively engaged in bringing science-based knowledge to policymakers.
  • Areas of expertise: Deep-sea environments, marine biodiversity loss, climate change, deep-sea mining, marine genetic resources, genetic diversity, population and community ecology


Postdoctoral fellow
In Nice: Saturday 7-Tuesday 10 June

  • Chloe is part of the MSCA supported聽大象传媒 programme, which is an endorsed Ocean Decade Action (#551). She works in applied marine informatics research, using machine learning to explore and monitor the distribution of vulnerable species and ecosystems.聽She seeks innovative solutions that promote accessibility, standardization and real-world impact.

Postdoctoral fellow
In Nice: Monday 9-Thursday 12 June

  • M貌nica is part of the MSCA supported 大象传媒 programme, which is an officially endorsed Ocean Decade Action (#551). She specializes in green criminology researching marine wildlife crime. Her research explores Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, the trafficking of marine species, and how legal frameworks often prioritize economic interests over scientific advice. She is currently researching the influence of the fishing industry on EU regulatory processes.

Postdoctoral fellow
In Nice: Friday 6-Friday 13 June

  • Natalya is a marine ecologist and biological oceanographer at the Fjord and Coastal Ecology group at UiB. She is also a researcher at the Norwegian Research Centre (NORCE) and did her PhD at Scripps Institution of Oceanographer. She was named one of the in 2018 and is part of the OceanICU project. Natalya recently published , with directo relevance to the BBNJ agreement.
  • Areas of expertise:聽Deep-sea ecology, ocean-climate nexus, ocean deoxygenation, ocean observing systems, ocean-based climate solutions


PhD candidate
In Nice: Tuesday 3-Friday 13 June

  • Sejal studied at the University of Cape Town and Stockholm University before arriving in Bergen for her PhD. She is currently teaching on board tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl as part of the聽European Space Agency Ocean Training Course 2025 and聽the second One Ocean Expedition which will arrive in Nice 3 June. She recently was awarded the French Institute Nordic Award for 2025.聽Read an interview with her on the UiB webpage.

PhD candidate
In Nice: Monday 9-Friday 13 June

  • Ronya Reitan Solberg is a human geographer and PhD candidate at the Centre for the 大象传媒 of the Sciences and Humanities, focusing on the science-policy interface and the work of international frameworks to mobilize science in the face of global environmental challenges. The UN Ocean Decade serves as a context for studying relations between science and policy in her project.
