Organized yearly since 2023, has become a highlight for local and international sea enthusiasts. From April 5th to 11th, a wide range of events focused on sustainability catered to diverse audiences, from researchers and policymakers to school pupils and their families.
The beautiful weather and majestic ships moored along the pier attracted a large number of curious visitors to Festningskaien for Family Day on April 6th. Among the many stations offering exciting activities for both children and adults, researchers from the Lynagh group prepared an interactive display exploring the brain of a marine worm. As a way to showcase their current research projects, they invited visitors to observe the animals under a microscope, discover the structure of a brain cell, and try reconstructing a 3D-printed neurotransmitter receptor.

The group introduced key concepts of their research using 3D models and infographics.
At the other end of the station, younger visitors were encouraged to build their own neuron out of clay wiith the help of C茅lia Jacquot, chemistry student and research intern in the Lynagh group. 鈥淭his was my first time taking part in a science outreach event, and I truly liked the experience and the concept to make science accessible to the general public鈥, she explained. 鈥淚 think that these events are great for scientists to learn to communicate what we do in simple terms and to take a step back and really appreciate the global idea behind what we are doing in the lab.鈥

Michael Sars Centre Director Lionel Christiaen presented the Appendicularian facility to visitors.
The following day, the Centre hosted a delegation of maritime industry professionals from Canada and Norway as part of a tour of the . After an introduction to the Centre鈥檚 research by Director , participants exchanged insights on how to better connect industry and academia. The visit, organized by Marine Dean , concluded with a tour of the Centre鈥檚 state-of-the-art animal facilities.
The diversity of actors involved in One Ocean Week makes it an important platform for imagining a sustainable future for the oceans, a goal that strongly resonates with the values of the Michael Sars Centre. We are looking forward to the next edition!
