The AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning has opened!

The official opening of the AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (AI LEARN) was marked with a celebration at the Faculty of Psychology at UiB on December 3rd. The centre will conduct research on the interaction between humans and artificial intelligence.

Main content

 is an interdisciplinary and intersectoral research and innovation center, led by UiB and NTNU. As part of the national investment in artificial intelligence, AI LEARN received NOK 200 million in support from in 2025 – the largest single allocation ever to a research centre at UiB.

The goal of the centre is to develop new knowledge about hybrid intelligence and to create solutions that ensure a sustainable, inclusive and responsible integration of AI into society.

– We are very proud to establish an AI center in Bergen! We want to understand how we learn, work and create together with AI, and use this knowledge to strengthen human agency in a time of rapid technological change, says , Director of AI LEARN and SLATE, and professor at UiB.

Research across disciplines and sectors

, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Collaboration at UiB, was responsible for the formal opening of the centre, while , Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at UiB, spoke about the importance of AI LEARN for the faculty. Sigrid Undheim Lygren and Sure Dommersnes from the Grieg Academy were behind the musical contribution during the opening event.

– It is important that we build knowledge and expertise to meet this development. The knowledge from AI LEARN will be used in education and training, in school, working life and in society in general, said Lehmann.

Lehmann described the allocation of NOK 200 million from the Research Council of Norway to ), through AI LEARN, as a great achievement and the result of hard work, collaboration and ambition. She said that over several years, SLATE has built up a strong academic environment and conducted research at a high international level.

Minister of Research and Higher Education sent a video greeting in which she emphasized that AI LEARN will be very important:

– I am pleased that AI LEARN will conduct research across disciplines and sectors and involve many actors. This means that we can gain more in-depth knowledge, new perspectives and that we can use research more quickly, said Aasland in the greeting.

A strong belief in research and innovation

Today, AI LEARN has 35 national and international partners from academia and the public and private sectors. During the opening event, representatives from , , , the and participated.

When the representatives spoke, they exhibited a strong belief in the importance AI LEARN's research and innovation will have for human interaction with artificial intelligence in Norway and Western Norway.

– AI LEARN will create new opportunities for both students and professionals, ensuring that the next generation of AI skills stays here in the region, said Lars Helge Sandvik-Jacobsen, Regional Director of Capgemini Bergen.

– AI LEARN conducts groundbreaking research that is relevant to absolutely everyone, said Project Manager and Research Communicator for VilVite – the science centre in Bergen, Josephine Alessandra Salice.

She explained that VilVite will ensure that the ideas from AI LEARN will be able to meet curious children, young people and adults who can learn something from them through a living arena. Salice believes that this is extremely important for people from Western Norway, Norway and outside Norway, because it can both build trust in research and ensure that people understand technology and can use it responsibly.
