MPSA-W method in the MRST core release

The Matlab Resevoir Simulation Toolbox MRST now provides the MPSA-W method for discretizing geomechanics.

We are happy to announce that the MPSA-W method for poro-mechanics has been fully implemented in the MRST core, and is thus compatible with MRST functionality such as multiphase flow and automatic differentiation capabilities. Existing simulations for porous media with a static rock can be easily turned into a poromechanical simulation with just a few simple extra lines of code.

The Multi-Point Stress Approximation (MPSA) method is a cell-centered finite volume discretization for linear elasticity, developed in our group. It is a close friend of the Multi-Point Flux Approximation (MPFA), widely used for the robust and accurate discretization of flow in porous media. Hence, similarly, the MPSA method allows for polygonal meshes and thereby blends well with the MPFA method for poromechanics simulations on such grids. Both methods are also implemented in our in-house simulator PorePy.

The is a free open-source software for reservoir modeling and simulation, developed primarily by the Computational Geosciences group in the Department of Mathematics and Cybernetics at SINTEF Digital. The software has a large international user base and also includes third-party modules developed by researchers from Heriot-Watt University, NTNU, University of Bergen, TNO, and TU Delft.
