Professor Kristoffer Chelsom Vogt was appointed Vice-Rector at the University of Bergen in the spring of 2025 for the term August 2025 – August 2029. His areas of responsibility are research education and internationalization.
Vogt has previously served as Head of the Department of Sociology. His research focuses on what is considered valuable knowledge in society. His early research explored how men in practical trades have been affected by the formalization and bureaucratization of the education system and the labor market. Later, his research expanded to the understanding of how engagement, learning, and educational choices among youth and young adults are shaped by institutional changes, family background, digitalization, social inequality, economics, and gender.
Vogt has been a prominent voice in academic and public debates, particularly on issues such as dropout rates in upper secondary education and the challenges faced by boys and men in the education system. A central question in his work has been the underlying concept of knowledge that informs the design of the education system, and how research and societal planning are often characterized by short-term thinking.
Vogt has contributed to several government-appointed public committees, maintains extensive dialogue with stakeholders outside academia, and currently serves on the Birth Rate Committee, which investigates the causes and consequences of declining birth rates. He is also Chair of the National council of sociology (UHR).
