Waiting to leave
18.07.2008 The ship is resting in Troms酶. The crew and the main part of the scientists from the first leg have left for a well deserved holiday, and a new crew and new scientists are embarking the G.O.Sars. The weather is nice, typical for the summer in the north of Norway; calm and cloudy. Nothing is really happening, we are only waiting for the moment to leave.

...But now we're on our way!

We're leaving Troms酶 at half past seven in the evening. The sun is shining, everybody's on deck. We have had dinner and a security course, and we are now going to gather with Rolf, our leader. He will tell about the plans for this leg, which is going to the Jan Mayen area, on the midatlantic ridge. We'll go back to a hydrothermal area which was found 2-3 years ago, and collect some material from samplers set out at that time. Scientists from USA, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland and Bergen are telling us what they plan to do, and everybody wants to start as soon as possible. The sun is still shining as we leave the coast; we see a whale in the surface of the sea, and have a light evening meal in the dining room. The standard is very high on board; there is always a lot of delicious food and desserts, and the cabins and the service are very satisfactory. On the bridge the offiser is drinking coffee and looking for whales. Maybe this is the last time we'll see the midnight sun this year?
