High wind hampers the work

22.07.2008 Because of the very high wind today the ROV can't dive. Somebody has some work to do from yesterday, but the majority is happy to have a rest. We can use the CTD in periods, and it has been down for samples of water for methane analysis. Also the box core has made some work for the macrobiologists. Otherwise the time is used for eating, reading, talking and watching movies. Today Kevin Costner is on the screen in Mr. Brooks.

The weather forecast said it would be high wind, and so it is. J酶rn and Tim are sentrifuging some of the bacterias they found yesterday, and the macrobiologists are sorting out animals from their 2 box cores, though without finding much. They suspect the high content of sulfur to be the reason for that. Marvin is analysing the gas content in water samples from the "Troll wall"; the area that was examined yesterday. He finds that they contain a lot more of methane than the samples from the "new" vent they found on the Mohns ridge in the first leg of the cruise. Nevertheless; there is no great danger for the methane to disappear into the atmosphere, because it will be eaten by bacterias long before that. David is the photographer on this leg of the cruise, and he has made some nice stills from the ROV video yesterday.

Alvaro and Agata are still waiting for their samples, so the plan for tomorrow is to go to a caldera area to get some sediment cores.
