At the meeting, Dr. Hildur Skuladottir, a plastic surgeon at Haraldsplass Diakonale Sykehus, presented a national study on lipedema—a condition that affects many women but remains poorly understood and frequently misdiagnosed. The study highlights the urgent need for better diagnostics, treatment, and awareness of this condition within the healthcare system.
Nina Grytten Torkildsen, Center Coordinator at DRIV - Centre for Women's Health Research, gave an overview of the center’s mission and ongoing work. She emphasized DRIV’s interdisciplinary approach to women’s health, focusing on expanding research, knowledge dissemination, and policy advocacy in this historically underprioritized field.
"It’s inspiring to meet so many dedicated women and share the work we do at DRIV. Women’s health has long been neglected, and we’re grateful to collaborate with the Sanitetskvinnene to change this," said Grytten Torkildsen.
The partnership between DRIV and Norske Kvinners Sanitetsforening (Norwegian Women's Public Health Association) marks a crucial step toward evidence-based, inclusive health policies that truly address women’s needs. NKS Vestland is supporting DRIV’s lipedema research with NOK 50,000—a significant contribution that will strengthen efforts to improve women’s healthcare.
Dr. Skuladottir expressed her deep gratitude to Norske Kvinners Sanitetsforening Vestland for their generous support of lipedema research during the annual meeting in Bergen.
