The symptoms due to the physical changes involved in pregnancy often lead women to self-medicate using herbal medicines. However, knowledge about the true effects of these medicines is lacking. More information is needed.

El Hajj undertook a literature review of this area with a special focus on sub-Saharan Africa. The review covers challenges, safety, prevalence of use, and examples. The information is summarised accessibly in a table. Her work identifies an important 鈥渘eed to better understand the reasons and facilitators of herbal medicine use in pregnant women from sub-Saharan Africa.鈥
