Award ceremony at the University Aula in Oslo

Thursday, March 2nd 2017, this year's Thon funding was presented to the awardees at the University Aula in Oslo. CCBIO's Lars A. Akslen and Elisabeth Wik attended the prestigious ceremony to receive a grant in the category of national research-based teaching.

CCBIO's Lars A. Akslen and Elisabeth Wik receive the grant from the chairman of the foundation's board, Olav Thon. In the background you can see Anne Berit Guttormsen, also from UiB and the Department of Clinical Medicine, who received an award for excellent teaching. Besides her is Jan Hoeijmakers from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who was awarded the International Research Prize.

This is the third year the Olav Thon Foundation has awarded scientific prizes聽and grants to education-related research within the fields of medicine, mathematics and聽natural sciences.聽The awards and grants are given to high-quality international and national research and to research-based teaching at聽university and university college level.聽

.

Rector of the University of Oslo, Ole Petter Ottersen, gave the welcoming speech. The foundation's academic council presented聽the awards, and board director of the foundation,聽Olav Thon, had the honour of giving the prizes to the awardees. Musical entertainment was provided by Ole Edvard Antonsen, trumpet, the Norwegian Student Choral Society,聽Catharina Chen, violin and Jie Zhang, grand piano.

Akslen and聽Wik received support for the CCBIO聽project聽"Harvard Cancer Research: Partnership for excellent education and research". The project is supported by a total of 1.5 million NOK聽over three years. You can read more about the project in the article聽below.

The University Aula is a grand place for ceremonies like this. Edvard Munch worked during the years 1909-1916 with the paintings decorating the aula, none less than 11 monumental pieces. Here we can see the prestigious award taking place under the perhaps most famous painting, the Sun.
