We are proud to announce that current BCEPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow Anand Bhopal won PhD Dissertation of the Year 2024! The highly competitive prize is awarded annually by the University of Bergen Medical Faculty.

Anand is a medical doctor and completed his PhD at BCEPS under the supervision of former BCEPS Director Professor Ole Frithjof Norheim and Professor Kristine B忙r酶e. He defended his award-winning dissertation, entitled "Fair Pathways to Net Zero Healthcare", on 17 June, 2024, in front of a large, highly engaged audience.

He also holds a master's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Health Economics from University College London.

In his nomination for the award, the committee writes:

"We want to nominate Bhopal because his thesis spans a new and important research field at IGS: Health, Climate and Justice. In his thesis, Bhopal explores the challenges and opportunities of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the health sector, and outlines principles for more equitable pathways to zero emissions that also take into account inequalities in health and income within and between countries. We would also like to highlight that two of the three included articles were published in highly ranked journals (BMJ - IP 93; Nature Medicine - IP 59)."

They further comment:

"The candidate's outstanding qualities are further documented by the fact that, from the start of his PhD work to date, he has published seven peer-reviewed articles, four of which as lead author, and nine editorials and commentaries, five of which as lead author, in addition to the thesis itself."

All of us at BCEPS congratulate Anand on this very well-deserved award and look forward to the important work he will continue to do as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at our Centre.
