New insight on floods risk from the bottom of the lake (08.02.2017)
The Department of Earth Sciences (GEO) is part of HordaFlom, an innovative project which will analyze lake sediments to reconstruct flooding events during the last 2000 years and which will provide more robust projections of future floods

First dCod workshop (02.01.2017)
The first workshop in the dCod 1.0 project was organized at Voss during a busy December month. 22 participants from all Norwegian partners participated in discussions, cross-disciplinary crash courses, and teambuilding.

In connection with T. Frede Thingstad becoming Professor Emeritus at the University of Bergen from 2017, a seminar was held at the University of Bergen and Hjort Centre for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics on December 2nd to bring Frede鈥檚 work into an international perspective and celebrate his professional and collegial achievements.

Five new research projects to scientists at Geophysical Institute (09.12.2016)
In the programme FRINATEK, the research counsil distributed 251 mill. NOK on 32 new research projects. Four of these are for researchers at Geophysical Institute. We also got one of five projects in the programme Polarprog.

Several partners of the dCod 1.0 project participated in field studies in the Oslo fjord. The aim of the expedition was to study the pollution levels of cod in this popular area. For two of the four days they were joined by ecology students and teachers from the University of Oslo.
Apinya Singkhala
Visiting PhD student from Thailand (14.11.2016)
Ms Apinya Singkhala has a Royal Golden Jubilee PhD scholarship awarded by the Thai Research Fund for a 10 month reseach visit to BIO. She will work on thermophilic bacteria and hydrolytic enzymes from hot springs in Thailand.

El Ni帽o influences the formation of low pressure systems over the Gulf Stream (01.11.2016)
Analysis of cyclone tracks and precyclogenesis flow conditions show us that El Ni帽o can shift the preferred cyclogenesis position over the Gulf Stream which influences the cyclone鈥檚 track across the North Atlantic. The results are published in the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences.
NordMin PhD course
Seafloor Mineral Resources and Prospects of Deep-Sea Mining (26.10.2016)
The Centre for Geobiology (CGB) held a PhD course addressing the geological, environmental and technological challenges facing deep-sea mining and mineral extraction.
Green PARP representations in the attached figure were partially flattened in order to reveal the branching structure as-good-as-possible, while the gray representations show simple projections from 3D to 2D.
